TheGunpowderPlotwasconspiracy (阴谋) tokillKingJamesI,aswellasthemembersoftheHouseofLordsandCommonsatthere-openingofParliament.ItwasdesignedbyagroupofCatholicsinprotestagainsttheanti-Catholiclawsthatwerebeingintroducedbytheking.
RobertCatesbywastheleaderofthegroup.Itwasheandhiscousin,ThomasWintour,andtwootherfriends,ThomasPercyandJohnWright,whoformedthecenterofthegroup.Theywerejoinedbyninemoremen; amongthemwasGuyFawkes,fromthecityofYorkinthenorthofEngland.
FawkesfoundastoreroomdirectlyundertheHouseofLordsandrenteditoutunderthefalsenameofJohnJohnson.Theconspiratorsstoredthirty-sixbarrelsofgunpowderthere,andFawkes,whowasanexplosivesexpert,wastolightthefuses (引信) on5thNovember1605.
Theplotfailedbecauseoneoftheconspirators,FrancisTresham,sentalettertohisrelative,whowasamemberoftheHouseofLords.TheletterwarnedhimnottoattendtheopeningceremonyofParliament.Theletterwaspassedontotheauthorities,whotookaction.
GuyFawkeswasfoundinthecellaronthenightof4thNovemberwiththethirty-sixbarrelsandanumberoffuses.Hewasimprisonedandill-treated,eventuallygivingawaythenamesoftheconspirators.
SoldiersofthekingsurroundedHolbeachHouse,intheMidlands,wheretheyknewtheconspiratorstobehiding.Inthefightthatfollowed,fourofthemwereshotdead,includingCatesbyandPercy,whowereactuallykilledbythesamebullet.TheotherswereimprisonedandhangedalongwithGuyFawkeson31stJanuary1606.
Thesedays,on5thNovember,childrenalloverBritaincelebrateGuyFawkesNightbybuildinghugebonfiresandlightingfireworks.It'safamilytraditionandanoccasiontoeatpotatoesbakedbytheflames.Thereisalwaysa'guy'ontopofthefire,amodelofGuyFawkes,dressedintheclothesofthe17thcentury.
